Dr. Mohammad Usman Nizami — A Journey of Qur’anic Learning, Medicine, and Research

Dr. Mohammad Usman Nizami developed a deep interest in the Holy Qur’an from an early age. As a child, he was not satisfied with simply reciting the Qur’an; he wanted to understand its meaning and message. He studied the Qur’an along with its translation and continued learning about its teachings, seeking to gain as much knowledge as possible.

At the same time, his interest in religious learning did not prevent him from pursuing a professional education in medicine. He studied medicine at Kabul University while continuing his religious studies alongside his academic education. This combination of medical training and continuous study of the Qur’an shaped his approach to knowledge and encouraged him to look at both religious and scientific questions with seriousness and careful thought.

After completing his medical education, Dr. Nizami worked as a doctor and continued his professional life in medicine. Later, he moved to London, United Kingdom. However, his relocation did not cause him to leave behind his religious studies or his interest in the Qur’an. Instead, he devoted even more time and attention to studying, researching, and reflecting on the Qur’an and its message.

Over time, Dr. Nizami came to recognize what he considered an important need among Pashto-speaking Muslims: access to a carefully researched, accurate, authentic, and scientifically informed translation of the Holy Qur’an in the Pashto language.

He believed that translating the Qur’an requires much more than replacing Arabic words with words in another language. Understanding the intended meaning of an Ayah may require attention to Arabic vocabulary, grammar, context, classical interpretations, and the broader subject being discussed. Where an Ayah relates to the natural world, human creation, the universe, or other scientific subjects, he also saw value in examining relevant and reliable scientific evidence.

This realization became one of the motivations behind his decision to undertake a detailed Pashto translation of the Holy Qur’an. The work is being approached with particular attention to individual words, their meanings, context, and the relationship between the original Arabic text and the Pashto language.

For Dr. Nizami, this is not simply a translation project. It is part of a longer journey that began with a child's desire to understand the Qur’an, continued alongside his education in medicine, and developed further through years of study and research.

His medical background has also influenced his interest in scientific subjects and his desire to examine questions carefully and according to evidence. At the same time, his religious studies have remained central to his work, with the Qur’an and authentic Hadith serving as the primary religious sources for his continuing research.

His work is therefore an attempt to bring together two areas of lifelong interest: understanding the message of the Qur’an and pursuing knowledge through study and evidence.

The Qur’anic translation is only one part of this wider project. Following its completion, Dr. Nizami intends to continue his research and produce further writings and books based on the Holy Qur’an and authentic Hadith, addressing subjects such as faith, atheism, science, contemporary questions, and matters relevant to human life.

One of his works, “Islam, Atheism and Science,” is already available on this website. Through this and future works, his aim is to encourage deeper study, thoughtful discussion, and a careful examination of important questions through the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, reason, and reliable scientific research.

Above all, Dr. Mohammad Usman Nizami regards this work as a continued effort to learn, research, and serve the Qur’an. He recognizes the responsibility involved in presenting the words and message of the Holy Qur’an to readers and therefore seeks to approach the work with sincerity, humility, careful research, and intellectual honesty.

His journey—from learning the Qur’an as a child, to studying medicine at Kabul University, to practicing medicine, and later continuing his religious and research work in London—has ultimately led him to this project: an effort to make a carefully studied and accessible Pashto translation of the Holy Qur’an available to Pashto-speaking readers.
